Missions

CBC Mission’s Philosophy

CBC has received a commission from Jesus Christ. That commission, recorded in various scriptures (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-20; Luke 24:44-53; John 20:21-23, 30-31; Acts 1:8-11), is to make disciples of people throughout all the world. Making a person a disciple of Jesus Christ involves going to them, preaching/witnessing to them the gospel, baptizing them when they trust Jesus, and mentoring them in all things taught by Jesus.

God’s design for obeying this commission is unfolded in the New Testament. The gospels present Jesus calling out His people and organizing them into His church for this work. After His death, Jesus instructed His apostles to spread out and evangelize new areas. Acts 1:8 instructed them to fulfill the Lord’s commission both in Jerusalem (where they were) and to Judaea, Samaria and the uttermost part of the earth (where they were not) – where they were and where they were not. The story of how they accomplished this, leaving new churches in their paths, is recorded in Acts. The epistles of the New Testament instruct those new churches in doctrine and practice. The partnerships that were forged between the missionary and the supporting churches is evident in Paul’s mission endeavors (study Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi).

From the earliest possible time in each evangelistic effort a church is born – an assembly of converts becomes a New Testament church whose purpose is to obey the commission given to them. Thus, the work of missions is accomplished as Jesus’ churches reproduce themselves throughout the world. The end result of every successful missions project is an autonomous, effective church which obeys the commission of Jesus Christ by purposing to make disciples amongst all nations (the mission church becomes a missionary-sending church).

The terms “missions” and “missionary” have been used of a variety of humanitarian and Christian endeavors. Therefore, for clarity, the term “church-planting missionary” has become popular among churches seeking to accomplish Jesus’ commission utilizing the methodology found in the Bible. The mission of CBC is to carry out the commission of Jesus in Northern Virginia while, at the same time, participating in church-planting mission projects throughout the world.
